KAZAKHSTAN JOINS UN CONVENTION ON MARITIME TRANSPORT OF GOODS New York, Jun 24 2008 5:00PM Kazakhstan has become the 34th country to accede to a United Nations treaty covering the maritime transport of goods, the UN Commission on International Trade Law (<"http://www.uncitral.org/uncitral/en/index.html">UNCITRAL) announced today.
The UN Convention on the Carriage of Goods by Sea, also known as the "Hamburg Rules," will enter into force for Kazakhstan on 1 July next year.
The pact, adopted in 1978 at the request of developing countries, sets up a uniform legal regime governing the rights and obligations of shippers, carriers and consignees under a contract of carriage of goods by sea.
UNCITRAL, which is based in Vienna, works to remove obstacles to international trade by progressively modernizing and harmonizing trade law.
