TOP UN HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICIAL TO VISIT PAKISTAN ON FINAL TRIP

TOP UN HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICIAL TO VISIT PAKISTAN ON FINAL TRIP New York, Jun 24 2008 10:00AM The United Nations human rights chief will be travelling to Pakistan on Wednesday in what will be her last official mission overseas before stepping down on 30 June.

This will be the first visit to Pakistan for High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour, who has visited nearly 55 countries during her four years in office.

During her three-day visit, Ms. Arbour will be meeting with top Pakistani government officials, members of civil society and other actors to discuss a range of human rights issues.

Ms. Arbour, a Canadian Supreme Court justice and ex-prosecutor of UN war crimes tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, assumed the post of High Commissioner in 2004 after her predecessor, Sergio Vieira de Mello, was killed in a terrorist attack in Baghdad the previous August.

The selection process for her successor is still ongoing.
