BAN URGES CLOSER RELATIONS BETWEEN UN AND RED CROSS, RED CRESCENT SOCIETIES

The already close relationship between the United Nations and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies should be strengthened even more to ensure a better response to disasters and crises and greater progress in the campaign against extreme poverty.

"The major humanitarian challenges at the top of your agenda – including climate change, international migration, urban violence and disease – are also priorities for the United Nations. Our work is truly complementary," Mr. Ban said in a message to the International Federation's Pan African Conference, held in Johannesburg.

"We also share a commitment to achieving the Millennium Development Goals [MDGs]. Indeed, empowering the weak and vulnerable, providing decent work for all and winning the fight to eradicate extreme poverty are among our best bets for protecting against the impact of disasters."

Mr. Ban said it was important to build on the efforts at last month's high-level events in New York, where world leaders agreed to step up their financial commitments and other efforts towards achieving the MDGs and boosting development in Africa.

"Let us consolidate and deepen the global partnership, so that we can better serve the millions who depend on our help and support, and put the world on a more equitable and sustainable path to development."

The message to the conference was delivered on Mr. Ban's behalf by Cheick Sidi Diarra, the Secretary-General's High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States.
