UN OFFICIALS GATHER TO MARK FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF DEADLY BAGHDAD BOMBING New York, Aug 19 2008 9:10AM United Nations officials, including Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, are gathering at UN Headquarters in New York for a solemn ceremony to mark the fifth anniversary of the deadly bombing of the world body's headquarters in Baghdad.
The terrorist attack on the Canal Hotel in the Iraqi capital on 19 August 2003 claimed the lives of 22 people, including the top UN envoy in the country, Sergio Vieira de Mello, and wounded more than 150 others.
Today's ceremony, organized by the Standing Committee on the Security and Independence of the International Civil Service, will highlight the importance of staff safety and security and draw attention to other recent incidents which have resulted in the deaths of UN personnel.
